Crypto Withdrawal Address: Formats, Checksums and Memo Tags

Ethereum case checksums, 90-character Bech32 bitcoin strings and unchecked XRP tags: what each catches before a casino cashout leaves, and what slips by.

By The cryptoslot Ledger4 min read

A crypto withdrawal address is the string your casino cashout gets sent to, and the chain only checks part of it. Ethereum and bitcoin addresses carry checksums that catch most typos, but a memo or destination tag on a chain like XRP Ledger is not checked at all. Copy the address from the receiving wallet, match the network, and treat the tag as part of the address.

What a casino cashout needs from the address

Three things have to line up before you hit withdraw: the address format for the chain, the network the casino will send on, and any memo or tag the receiving side asks for. The address is the only field the chain itself helps you verify, and how much it helps depends on the coin.

ChainAddress checkCase ruleWhat it misses
EthereumMixed-case checksum in the lettersAll-lowercase or all-caps carries no checkRare typos that still pass
Bitcoin (Bech32)Built-in error-detecting checksumEncoded lowercase, uppercase only for displayA valid address on the wrong network
XRP LedgerAddress checked, tag not checkedNot applicable to the tagA wrong destination tag

Ethereum addresses: the checksum lives in the capital letters

An Ethereum withdrawal address has a checksum, but it is carried by letter case, not extra characters. The mixed-case checksum standard EIP-55 keeps the address at 40 characters and uses capitalisation as the check.

That guard is strong but not perfect. Per the same standard, a mistyped address slips past the check 0.0247% of the time. The bigger gap is case: an address pasted in all lowercase or all caps is still valid but carries no checksum information, so software has nothing to compare against. If a casino cashier shows your address flattened to lowercase, compare it against the mixed-case version in your own wallet before confirming.

Bitcoin Bech32 addresses: lowercase, up to 90 characters

Native segwit bitcoin addresses (the ones starting with bc1) use Bech32, defined in BIP 173, the Base32 address format. A Bech32 string is at most 90 characters long, and encoders always output it in lowercase. Uppercase is only for presentation, such as inside a QR code.

Bech32 exists partly because the older base58 format's double SHA256 checksum gave no guarantees about catching errors. A withdrawal address in Bech32 is the safer string to paste, but it only proves the characters are intact. It does not prove you picked the right coin or network on the cashier screen.

Memos and destination tags: the field the chain does not check

On XRP Ledger, a destination tag tells a shared receiving address which account the coins belong to, and the ledger cannot tell whether that tag is right. The XRP Ledger docs on destination tags say receivers must be ready for payments with the wrong tag, because nothing on chain rejects them.

For a cashout that means a wrong or missing tag does not bounce. The coins land at the address, and getting them credited is up to the operator who runs it. If the receiving wallet or exchange gives you a tag, it goes in the casino's memo field every time.

A cashier-desk checklist before you confirm

  • Copy the address from the receiving wallet, never retype it.
  • Check the network on the cashier screen matches the chain the address belongs to.
  • For Ethereum, keep the mixed-case form so the checksum is live.
  • For bitcoin Bech32, expect bc1 and all lowercase.
  • For tagged coins like XRP, fill the memo or tag field with the exact value you were given.
  • If the casino offers address whitelisting or a small first withdrawal, use them on a new address.

Cashier questions

What is a crypto withdrawal address?

It is the receiving address on the chain you cash out to, written in that chain's own format. An Ethereum address and a Bech32 bitcoin address look different and are checked differently, so the address has to match the coin and network the casino sends on.

Why is my crypto not allowing me to withdraw?

One common cause at the address step is a string that fails the format or checksum check, such as a bitcoin Bech32 address with mixed case or an Ethereum address with a broken capitalisation pattern. Fix the paste from the source wallet rather than editing characters by hand.

What happens if I send XRP with the wrong destination tag?

The payment still settles. The XRP Ledger does not check whether a tag is valid, so the coins arrive at the receiving address and the operator behind it has to match them to an account through support.
